Interview with Matthew Conway | Restaurant Marc Forgione

My buddy John Coyle told me to go to Restaurant Marc Forgione and say hello to Matthew Conway and ask for the wine they’re pouring by the glass from a magnum.  So on a cool October evening, we headed over to  Marc Forgione’s place on 134 Reade Street, in TriBeCa.  The restaurant was buzzing with activity. Somehow, we timed it just right and got some seats at the community table opposite the bar. A server greeted us promptly and offered us a stylish small bound wine list in landscape format instead of the usual portrait format.  We asked for the Carrageenan from Provence poured for a magnum. As our server poured it for us, we noticed two suits to our left and a couple on a date to our right take notice of the oversized bottle service.  This prompted a conversation with the two Wall Street guys and they ended up ordering a glass each. Great marketing prowess Mr. Conway’s part. We couldn’t resist the wonderful flowery wine with ripe berry notes from the hand inked bottle with no paper label and had to have two more glasses. Before leaving I asked Matthew if he had any time tomorrow for a quick interview and he said he did.  I was excited to talk with him.

Aside from what you’ll hear in Matthew’s interview, he also joined the prestigious Sommelier team at Taillevent in Paris and completed the three-month training program and in 2012,  he traveled to Avenches, Switzerland where he became a certified coffee sommelier {how cool is that!} Matthew regularly contributes to The SOMM Journal industry publication.
