Interview with Alexander LaPratt | Master Sommelier

Alexander LaPratt, Ms, Owner Partner Atrium Discusses Wine and Wine Service

What do you think of when you think of Master Sommelier?  I think of dedication, immense dedication. It took Alex 7 days a week for 7 years to prepare, study and pass his Master Sommelier exams.  “No easy feat when one in seventy will receive the diploma of Master Sommelier….Candidates must have successfully passed three previous stages: the Introductory, Certified and Advanced exams.”  According to a release from the Court of Master Sommeliers, the invitation-only Master Sommelier Diploma Exam “consists of three sections, including a theory examination, blind tasting and practical service component.” To earn the master sommelier title, candidates have to receive passing scores in all three.”  ~ S. Irene Virbila, LA Times

“There are 140 professionals who hold the title Master Sommelier in North America and the CMS Americas. Of those 119 are men and 21 are women. There are 219 professionals worldwide who have earned the title Master Sommelier since the first Master Sommelier Diploma Exam.”~ The Court of Mater Sommeliers

Alexander LaPratt is looked up to by his peers and is one of the most down to earth guys I’ve ever met.  When ever I brought up Alex’s name in passing while speaking to other Somms and wine directors in NYC he is revered for his talent and kindness personality.  He was generous with his time and even tasted my on some amazing white Burgundies.  Below is a photograph of the exterior of Atrium, a wonderful restaurant located at 15 Main Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY where he is an owner partner.

Sit back and relax, grab a glass of bottle of Burgundy and enjoy the interview below.

The Bourgogne Blanc 2011 is a declassified white Burgundy. Silky smooth, amazing, hints of butterscotch and minerality with tremendous terroir.
